Hello! Welcome to the Bird Brains Drama Resources Homepage!
Bird Brains is the brilliant collaboration between Quirky Bird's Artistic Director Anna Friend and Kirsten 'Birdy' Lane who has been successfully delivering Drama and Theatre Studies at A Level and GCSE for over 20 years. Together they have a wealth of experience teaching drama and bringing productions to life and now have come together to create teacher friendly resources designed to enhance your classroom practice and steer your students towards exam success.
You can also find scripts and resources for all ages from Anna Friend!
Anna Friend has been working as a Director and teacher for the past 12 years after completing her PGCE at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She has founded and run two Youth Theatre companies, inspiring many members to continue onto to further training in the arts. Quirky Bird Theatre launched in November 2015 and since then has gained a reputation for compelling, surprising theatre with young actors at the heart of it. Most recently she has directed DNA by Dennis Kelly and That Face by Polly Stenham which both tour schools and colleges across the UK.Other projects include Spur of the Moment by Anya Reiss at the Shoebox Theatre, Heartbreak Beautiful by Christopher William Hill and the 2018 Old Town Nativity. Anna is also Resident Director at one of Bristol's much loved studio theatre's, The Alma Tavern Theatre. She directed and performed in their debut homegrown production of 'Two' by Jim Cartwright and has received 5* reviews for her adaptation of the Ibsen classic 'A Dolls House' and 'flawless' interpretation of Mike Leigh's 'Abigail's Party'. Most recently she starred in the one woman
tour-de-force 'Shirley Valentine' by Willy Russell which is set to return to the stage in November 2020.
Kirsten ‘Birdy’ Lane trained in Performing Arts at Cheltenham and her PGCE at Breton Hall and has been teaching drama for 24 years within educational settings from secondary schools, further education colleges and now Millfield School where she was in charge of Drama for six years, she has led drama departments and seen many of her students go on to work in the industry as actors, directors, writers and designers and enjoys supporting young people to achieve their goals. She ran her own local children’s theatre company, 3D. She is a Shakespeare for Schools ambassador and has worked with them and Clickview to produce educational films. Kirsten regularly attends practical and theoretical drama training events and loves to impart her skills and knowledge to other teachers as well as students. She hosted two Drama GCSE and A Level training events at Millfield for local teachers and has spent a lot of time working on the Drama GCSE paper, making resources and exploring ways of grappling with the questions to achieve the best marks for the students. As part of Bird Brains she hopes to tackle other texts in the future and offer online and face to face training for Drama teachers everywhere.
